What are the basics of lent?
Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving: are the three pillars of Lent
Lent is roughly 40 days long. Lent starts Ash Wednesday and ends once the Holy Thursday mass begins.
Catholics age 18-59 in good health must fast and abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Catholics age 14 and older must abstain from eating meat on Fridays.
The traditional custom of giving up something or doing something extra for Lent is voluntary, but encouraged.
